Math Party!
Victoria had a tricky time with math this year. A few of her friends did too, so before SOLs, we had a math party to review. We made brownies and lemonade. That provided us with opportunities to talk about cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. We also talked about fractions and used division to cut the brownies. Fun stuff like that. We played a jeopardy style game to review as well. We used board game money so they not only had to solve the problems and answer the questions, but they also worked with money.
They won pencils with the times tables on them. I made them promise to never use them on a test or quiz or to cheat in any way. They are good girls, so they wouldn't have anyway.
They did a bit of Multiplication Rock too!
They had fun. I literally heard, "Wow, math is really fun!" There's no reason it shouldn't be, right?!
Christian's Zoo Field Trip
The first graders took a trip to the Richmond Metro Zoo in early May. They had a fun time and Grant and Katherine and I were happy to join Christian. First we listened to a presentation and saw an ostrich egg, a snake, a penguin, and an orangutan. Then, we walked around the zoo. We spent most of the time with Christian's friend, Damonte and his parents and baby brother. They had a great time together and were very quick! We saw everything and had plenty of time for lunch. Here are a few shots of the day.
