Learning Vacation in Raleigh/Durham

We had a great trip, even from the first fill-up. Danny sometimes entertains us when he pumps gas. Really. He is funny.
First, we went to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

We chose it because we thought it would be free with our Virginia Living Museum pass. It reciprocates with many science museums across the country (just need to be more than 90 miles from home and the museum). Anyway, we found out that it is free! Donations welcome though. That is awesome because it was a great museum. We enjoyed it quite a bit.

The whale bones were impressive!

There was special Soil Exhibit. The best thing in the soil section was an augmented reality sandbox. It was basically kinetic sand with a changing topographic projection over it. I think we forgot to take pictures there because we were so busy playing. Very cool though.

We had some elevator/escalator fun too. By fun, I mean races and pretending that we are pulling it and so forth.
I enjoyed all of the animals, but thought that the arthropod zoo was really cool!

As we were leaving we noticed that the museum next door was also free admission. It was  thorth Carolina Museum of  History. the http://ncmuseumofhistory.org/
We didn't have too much time to explore, because it was nearing 5, but Fred Olds gave Grant the key and in we went in for a few minutes. We really only had time to check out the outside exhibits, statues and the NC Sports Hall of Fame.
When we were back in the car Katherine said that the above car was her favorite part of the day. We think it was just one the last things she saw, but maybe she has a real love for Taladaga Nights.

We went to a good burger place called Jake's Wayback Burgers.   The burgers really were amazing. We were less than impressed with their shakes though.

We went to our hotel, changed, and played in the pool for a bit before bedtime. It is fun to have a whole pool to yourselves.

We had continental breakfast, which was a hit with the kids, in the hotel the next morning.

Then we were off to museum number 3! It was called the Museum of Life and Science. It was really awesome too! We were so glad that we changed things up. We were planning to go to the DC museums, but thought something different would be fun!

Not many science museums include social science, but this one did. That made me happy because social sciences are my favorite!

We really could have stayed here all day. We didn't see everything, but we were hungry for lunch(which was food in a cooler both days) and also wanted to hit the Marble Museum.

We have been there before, but it had been a few years. Again, it did not disappoint. The kids and adults enjoyed it.

It was a great trip. I should mention the crazy though. You know, just so you understand why the blog is called what it is. So, on the way there, I took Katherine to the bathroom at a Hardees. Well, I took my wallet/cell case/keychain in with me and hung it on the hook on the stall door. I wasn't the one driving so didn't notice until we got to the first museum (which by the way was the Marble museum, but it was closed on Monday afternoon. Yes, I probably should have checked the hours before driving 3 hours too.) Anyway, long story short. It was safe. We called the Hardees. Someone found it and turned it in! So thankful for honest people! We picked it up on our way home the next day. The drive home was stormy. We turned around to go help a man whose car was in the ditch of the medium between the two sides of highway. He was fine- fishing actually. We drove about 20 minutes in the wrong direction after our detour. We realized that we had seen Paul Bunyon and his blue cow on the cabin roof before. Yes, we have a great time and love each other, but we are as  crazy as ever. Did I mention that we didn't decide where we would go for our overnight until that morning? Wonder where we will go next time!
